Information for Parents

Purpose:

Our goal is to position our teams to compete for the national championship annually. Further, we intend to maximize the scholarship potential for those players wishing to compete at NCAA or NAIA schools.  Additionally,  it is our mission to use the platform of team sport to develop the personal, team, and leadership skills of each player better preparing them for the road of life which lay ahead..

Background:

Since 1991 Houston area boys have been training and competing in the sport of indoor volleyball. There have been several boys high school “club” teams that formed intra-city leagues to be able to play against one another. After their high school seasons were completed many of the more talented and interested boys were put together to form “Junior Olympic” teams. These teams would compete against other boys JO teams from Dallas and San Antonio as well as various men’s and college teams in USA Volleyball sanctioned tournaments.

USA Volleyball is the sponsoring organization that hosts such tournaments for boys and girls, men and women of all ages throughout the United States. More information on this organization can be found at http://www.usavolleyball.org .  Each year USAV hosts national championships for all age groups. So, each year there is a Junior Olympic National Tournament hosted by USAV in early to mid-July.  Our Houston based Junior Olympic teams have been competing at Nationals since we began. (’93 Kansas City, ’94 Austin, ’95 Orlando, ’96 San Jose, ’97 Denver, ’98 Dallas, ’99 New Orleans, ’00 Reno)

Our teams have finished as high as 3rd  nationally and have ranked in the top 25 each of the last 6 years.  Our national presence and exposure has brought heightened attention and opportunities for our players wishing to compete at the NCAA or NAIA collegiate level. Our former players have gone on to play at Rutgers, UC Santa Barbara, Park College, LA Pierce, Pepperdine, U of Hawaii, University of Texas, Texas A&M, Sam Houston State, University of Arizona, and others. In 2000, Riley Salmon from Houston was named to the Team USA men's volleyball team. In 2001, Beau Daniels, a former Houston club playerand graduate of Clear Creek HS was named to the NCAA All American Team while leading his Pepperdine Waves to the National Championship Final against Hawaii.

In July 2002, our HVA 18s placed 3rd nationally. Eric Wooldridge (6'5"setter) and Matt Heym (6'0" Outside Hitter) were selected as 1st Team All Americans.

During the off-season after the '02 season, HVA assisted the creation of three new high school programs in Houston. Episcopal HS, Clear Lake HS, and LaPorte HS. HVA coaches serve all three programs.

Pre-season Parents Meetings:

There will be pre-season parents meetings held in the month of October to provide information and answer a host of questions that parents may have.

* Rookie Parents meeting (See Calendar) will be held for parents of players joining HVA for the first time this coming season. We will cover all of the common areas of question and walk you through the registration process.

* Veteran Parents meeting (See Calendar) will be given for players of returning HVA players and will cover the changes to last year's program.
